On December 13, City staff unveiled a preliminary floor plan for the upcoming Senior Center at a Town Hall style meeting in the future facility. Last spring, the City purchased the building (formerly the Airport Area YMCA) at the southeast corner of Central Drive and Cummings with the intention of turning it into a stand-alone Senior Center.

With the help of an architecture firm, the initial plans show the following spaces:

  • Three multi-purpose rooms for dining, special events, games, classes, group exercise programs, and much more
  • A commercial kitchen for preparing and serving food for Senior Center members
  • A gymnasium for basketball, pickleball, etc.
  • A game room with a pool table and ping pong table
  • A ceramics/craft room (with a kiln)
  • A library nook with seating
  • A reception area
  • Several offices for recreation staff
  • Restrooms

The final design is estimated to be complete in March with construction starting in April. The new Senior Center is expected to be completed in fall 2024. The seniors currently have senior programming at Old Bedford School, which was intended to be a temporary location following the renovations at Generations Park at Boys Ranch. The previous Senior Center within the former Bedford Boys Ranch had 9,000-square foot of usable space. The new building will have 14,000-square feet, once finished.

The City will provide more updates on this project, when available.
