[ARCHIVED] Winter Weather Closings, Trash Updates

Winter Weather Information graphic

Last Updated: Tuesday, February 1, 4:10 p.m.

An Ice Storm Warning is now in effect for our area with the potential of a half inch of ice accumulation on trees and power lines Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning.

City Facility Closures

All offices and facilities will remain closed Wednesday, February 1 and will reopen Thursday, February 2 at noon. This includes City Hall, Municipal Court, Old Bedford School (senior programming), Bedford Public Library, and the Animal Shelter.

If anyone has Municipal Court-related questions, please call 817-952-2150, Option 2 and leave a voicemail. A staff member will return the call when City offices reopen. For those with canceled court dates, staff will contact you to reschedule.

The Bedford Center YMCA Closure

The Bedford Center YMCA will be closed Wednesday.

Trash and Recycling

Republic Services has canceled all residential trash and recycling collections for Thursday, February 2. Republic crews will service TRASH ONLY on Friday for Thursday routes, and Saturday for Friday routes. Recycle and bulk collections will be suspended this week.

Crews will also start serving commercial customers (Ex. apartment complexes, businesses, etc. that contract with Republic) with a delayed start on Thursday, February 2. All services will resume the normal schedule beginning Monday, February 6.

If your trash and recycling was not picked up Monday, it was because Republic asked their trucks to return to their facility earlier in the afternoon due to worsening road conditions.

School Closures

All Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD closures will be shared on the HEB ISD website.

Road Conditions

Roads and sidewalks are frozen solid (it’s like an ice rink out there), making for some treacherous conditions. Please do not travel unless it’s absolutely necessary!

Public Works crews began brining major City intersections on Sunday, January 29. Crews are out and about and continue brining operations at City facilities and major roadways, including Harwood Road, Forest Ridge Drive, Brown Trail, Bedford Road, Cummings Drive (S.H. 121 to Brown Trail), and Hospital Parkway. Learn more about City brining operations

With these changing weather conditions, make sure you're staying up-to-date on the latest information from the U.S. National Weather Service or your local news stations. If you need to head out, please take it slow as freezing drizzle will create slick spots.

Power Outages

If you do lose power, outages can be reported directly to Oncor by texting “OUT” to 66267, calling 1-888-313-4747, or visiting https://stormcenter.oncor.com/.

The 4 P's

If you haven't already, please protect the 4 P's - people, pets, plants, and pipes.

  • People: Check in on your elderly neighbors, family, and anyone you know that may be vulnerable in winter conditions.
  • Pets: Bring your furry friends inside! If it’s too cold outside for you, it is for them too.
  • Plants: Bring plants inside or use a sheet/blanket to cover plants that must remain outside.
  • Pipes: Cover outdoor pipes and spigots to prevent freezing and breaks. Also, don’t forget to turn off your sprinkler systems. If you don’t know how to locate and shut off water for your home, please watch the City’s video to review how to safely turn off your water.

If you need assistance with turning off your water in an emergency, please call the Police Dispatch non-emergency line at 817-952-2127.

Home Heating Tips

With these chilly temps, keep these home safety tips in mind:

  • Give heaters space.
  • Plug all heating appliances directly into wall outlets, not power strips or extension cords.
  • Place heaters on a hard and level surface.
  • Turn them off when you leave the room or are sleeping.
  • Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended.
  • Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes.
