[ARCHIVED] How to Locate Your Water Shut-Off Valve

How to locate your water shut-off valve

If you need to shut off water to your home, there’s a way to do it without accessing your water meter box. Bedford homes with a concrete slab foundation most likely have a water shut-off valve outside their home, often within several feet of the City’s water meter box. Please keep in mind, it may be covered by landscaping material and, this week, snow.

In many cases it is within a few feet of your water faucet/hose connection on the front or side of your home. It is probably located inside a plastic box, with a green lid. Residents will only see the green lid, which should be level to the ground.

Once you open that box, there may be quite a bit of dirt in it. Once you clear the dirt out of the box, you will see a lever handle that is able to be turned manually. Turn this clockwise to shut off the water supply to your home. Homeowners may need to use a pair of pliers, crescent wrench, or channel lock.

If you need assistance shutting off the water to your home, please call the Bedford PD non-emergency line at 817-952-2127.
